AFB Volunteers Raise Funds for Victims of Violence

AFB International is proud to support causes that provide assistance to those in need—both pets and people. One human-focused organization is Turning Point, an emergency shelter and supportive services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The Missouri, USA, non-profit was created by the Warren County Council Against Domestic Violence to serve the county and four others that adjoin it.

The organization’s board of directors and staff always look for creative, effective ways to fund Turning Point’s 25-bed shelter and life skills, counseling and legal services. For the past two years, a key funding source has been the Rock the Runway Ladies Fashion Show and Happy Hour.

This year’s event, held in spring 2017 at Quail Ridge Lodge in Wentzville, Missouri, was coordinated by employees of AFB International. Twelve AFB employees served as runway models for the fashions of four local vendors. An additional 20 AFB employees collected items for the event’s raffles, decorated the venue, prepared and served specialty refreshments, and staffed the registration, ticket sales and gift tables.

The feedback from AFB employees was incredible. (They asked if we could do it again next year!) It was a great team-building experience that brought us together and created an atmosphere of friendship and collaboration outside our typical working relationships.

Thanks in part to AFB’s coordination and the centralized location, the event reached an expanded audience and raised $8,000. The funds will be used in Turning Point’s Life Empowerment Program, focused on helping women and children affected by domestic violence gain control of their lives.

Turning Point provides in-person services to approximately 240 women and children each year, including more than 3,500 bed nights. For more information about Turning Point, visit www.turningpointdvs.com.
